Samsung led the global smartphone market in the first three months of 2025. The trend continued, and it secured top spot in the second quarter as well, shipping 58 million Galaxy smartphones globally. The Korean firm’s latest mid-range models, the Galaxy A36 and A56, played a key role in its Q2 2025 performance.

Samsung maintained its leadership in the global smartphone market

According to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung achieved 7.9% year-over-year growth in shipments in Q2 2025, the highest among all vendors. Shipments increased from 53.8 million units in 2024 to 58 million units this year. Its global market share increased from 18.4% to 19.7% over the same period.

Its arch-rival Apple came in second place with 46.4 million units shipped and a 15.7% market share. It saw modest year-over-year growth of 1.5% in shipments. Likewise, Xiaomi maintained its position in third spot with 42.5 million units shipped, a 14.4% market share, and a slight annual growth of 0.6%. These figures highlight the strong demand for Samsung Galaxy smartphones compared to competitors’ offerings.

“Samsung was able to consolidate its market leadership and outperform the overall market achieving strong growth in the quarter driven by the sales of its new Galaxy A36 and A56 products,” said Francisco Jeronimo, vice president, Client Devices, IDC. “These new products introduce AI-enabled features to mid-range devices, which has been effectively used in retail stores to drive sales, as more consumers become curious about AI.”

In March 2025, Samsung unveiled its mid-range Galaxy devices — the Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A56. A key highlight of these phones is the introduction of Awesome Intelligence, which brings a bunch of Galaxy AI tools. Several AI-powered features, such as Instant Slo-mo, Object Eraser, AI Select, and Edit Suggestions, are key selling points. If you want to buy the Galaxy A36, it’s available right now with up to $287 instant trade-in credit. As for the Galaxy A56, it will arrive in the US later this year.
