While recent leaks about the Galaxy S26 Ultra have felt underwhelming, a new batch of details is sparking fresh excitement. Samsung may finally address one of the most criticized aspects of its Ultra flagships: the 3x zoom camera. The 2026 model is expected to feature a new 12MP sensor for this secondary telephoto lens. The front-facing camera could also see a long-awaited upgrade, giving selfie enthusiasts something to look forward to.

Samsung preps big camera upgrades for the Galaxy S26 Ultra

For several years now, Samsung’s Ultra flagships have used the same 10MP 3x telephoto camera. It has started to feel dated, and the company may finally address that with the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung is reportedly testing multiple sensors for the 3x zoom camera, with a 12MP unit emerging as the most likely candidate. While specific details remain limited, the upgrade could deliver sharper mid-range zoom shots.

What’s better? This may not be the only camera upgrade on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The 2026 model may also sport a new front-facing sensor. Samsung has equipped the lineup with a 12MP sensor from the S23 Ultra in 2023 to the S25 Ultra this year. Even if there’s no resolution change, we may get a new sensor next year. To recall, the S22 Ultra’s 10MP 3x zoom camera is different from the S21 Ultra’s 10MP 3x zoom camera.

The rest of the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s camera setup may remain largely unchanged. The 200MP primary sensor will still be Samsung’s ISOCELL HP2, now paired with a new lens for improved optical performance. The 5x periscope zoom camera is expected to retain the 50MP sensor first introduced with the S24 Ultra, while the 50MP ultra-wide lens from the S25 Ultra is also set to return.

However, there is another small but meaningful upgrade in the works — Samsung may improve the laser autofocus (AF) sensor for faster and more accurate subject tracking. The Galaxy S26 Ultra‘s camera system will be backed by Samsung’s next-generation ProVisual Engine, which is expected to enhance image processing, dynamic range, and low-light performance. More details should emerge in the coming months.
