Google has confirmed that it will launch its next-generation smartwatch software, Wear OS 6, later this year. As Wear OS 6 is based on Android 16, it will also follow the Material 3 Expressive design language. So, Galaxy Watch users should get a taste of a similar redesign with the upcoming Wear OS 6-based One UI 8 Watch.
Wear OS 6 brings a fresh look with Material 3 Expressive
In its The Keyword blog, Google revealed some of Material 3 Expressive’s design coming to Wear OS 6. With Material 3 Expressive, the company aims to offer a fluid design for your watch’s round display. “We wanted to move beyond something that was more functional to create something that has a deeper connection to you. With Wear OS 6, the first main thing we did was really embrace the circle,” says Lily Darling, Wear OS’ visual and motion lead, via The Verge.
When you scroll, this new design language offers smooth animations by following the curve of the smartwatch screen. On top of that, scrolling through lists now gives a sense of depth, making it easier to read and use. Some daily use features, such as the PIN pad and Media controls, now respond to your touch more smoothly. The new shape-changing elements allow things on the screen to change shape to better fit even on a small watch screen.
Another notable addition is the dynamic color theming that allows your chosen theme for your watch face to apply to the entire system. The glanceable buttons are space-efficient and easily tappable. The updated tiles are more useful, too, as they offer quick access to important actions like texting your favorite contacts or starting a workout.
Moreover, Google has also improved performance and optimized power with Wear OS 6, delivering up to 10% more battery life, according to the company. Meanwhile, Samsung is working on a battery protection feature for Galaxy Watches in One UI 8 Watch. And of course, Gemini is coming to Galaxy Watch watches, though you may not need Wear OS 6 (One UI 8 Watch) to try it out.
