Samsung’s Secure Folder Gains Private Fingerprint Support in One UI 8

by | May 14, 2025 | News, One UI

Samsung’s Secure Folder appears to be getting a major upgrade in One UI 8. Recent leaks suggest it’s switching to Android’s new Private Space API for improved privacy and security. We can now confirm that One UI 8 will also let Galaxy users register a separate fingerprint solely for Secure Folder access.

You can register separate fingerprints for Secure Folder in Samsung’s One UI 8 update

In One UI 8, when users first set up Secure Folder, they are given the option to enroll a fingerprint that is not linked to the main system. This fingerprint can only unlock your Secure Folder and does not appear in Settings, where you find your regular fingerprints. If you try to match your Secure Folder fingerprint through the regular fingerprint management settings, the system will not recognize it.

Likewise, you can’t access Secure Folder using your regular fingerprint registered through Settings. This isolation ensures that the fingerprint used for Secure Folder is invisible to the rest of the OS, adding another layer of discretion and privacy. In the images below, you can see that One UI 8 notes how many fingerprints are registered for Secure Folder, while Samsung’s One UI 7 update simply links to the main system fingerprints.

This could be a part of the shift to the Android Private Space API. Private Space aims to offer system-level, sandboxed environments for sensitive apps and data. While Secure Folder has already been doing this, this move tightly integrates it with Android’s core privacy architecture.

Rumors suggest One UI 8 could be available in beta later this month. Samsung could launch beta programs for the Galaxy S25 in select markets, with a wider beta release following in June. The stable version may arrive a couple of months later. Stay tuned as more One UI 8 details emerge, as Samsung looks focused on enhancing the security of Galaxy devices.
