Generative AI tools have many advantages, but when it comes to sharing sensitive information with the AI chatbot, it is always risky. For instance, back in 2023, Samsung employees accidentally shared confidential information while using ChatGPT. Since then, Korean firms have imposed a ban on generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, on company-owned devices. Now, a fresh report claims that Samsung is allowing its employees to use ChatGPT again, but under new security guidelines.
Samsung brings back ChatGPT for employees
In 2023, some employees from the semiconductor division used ChatGPT by pasting the source code directly into the chat box. This allowed the employee to check for any errors and understand the results. But the employees did not realize that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, uses conversion to train its models. So, this raised serious concerns about company secrets being leaked or reused.
Despite the earlier issues, Samsung maintained its relationship with OpenAI. In fact, Samsung’s chairman, Jay Y. Lee, met with OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, in February, suggesting that Samsung still sees generative AI as a powerful tool to increase productivity if employees use it wisely.
According to a report from Edaily (via KultureGeek), Samsung has recently re-authorized the use of ChatGPT in its several business divisions, mainly Samsung SDI, Samsung Display, and Samsung Electronics. This decision will improve the efficiency of teams, particularly in departments already working with different artificial intelligence technologies.
Even though the Korean firm allowed access to ChatGPT again, it’s still limited. Samsung has added new security guidelines and specific protocols in order to prevent any leakage of confidential information. However, Samsung is not allowing access to all teams. The report says that teams working on sensitive product development are not allowed. But this is understandable, the company does not want to take a risk again.
In addition to that, Samsung recently adopted Meta’s latest large language model, Llama 4, across the entire production line. Samsung expects that the Llama 4 models will help in operations and spot problems more efficiently.
