We know that Samsung has been hard at work on a tri-fold device, which could hit the market as the Galaxy G Fold sometime early next year. But if luck is on our side, we might even see its grand debut during Galaxy Unpacked in July. However, if a newly spotted patent is anything to go by, Samsung might have another trick up its sleeve, a tri-fold Flip. Pardon, if that’s not the right term.
Samsung’s new patent hints at a tri-fold Flip iteration
According to 91Mobiles, the patent hints at a tri-fold flip-style variant, suggesting that Samsung may have toyed with the idea. Whether this concept will see the light of day remains to be seen, but it certainly adds fuel to the fire of speculation.
Before you think this is just the same news on repeat, let’s clear that up, it’s not. Samsung is indeed working on a tri-fold device, possibly called the G Fold, but that’s a book-style foldable. What this new patent hints at, however, is something different, a tri-fold Flip. Unlike Samsung’s current single-fold Flip series, this one appears to fold twice, but vertically.
On paper, the design looks a bit complicated, but it’s still just a concept. Samsung patents plenty of ideas, and not all of them make it to production. While this unfolds like a Flip, it may not necessarily be part of the Flip lineup. If Samsung brings it to life, it could end up as a phone, or even a tablet.
One solid clue from the patent is the inclusion of an S Pen slot, suggesting a focus on productivity. The device also features a USB-C port at the bottom, with volume rockers and a power button at the top. Plus, a triple-camera module sits in the middle, adding to the intrigue.
