Samsung Display has long been a trusted supplier of OLED panels for Apple. The top-tier displays on iPhones come either from Samsung Display or LG Display. While Apple had turned to BOE for LTPS AMOLED screens for its non-Pro models such as the iPhone 14, 15, and 16, that move didn’t pan out due to quality issues on BOE’s end.
Apple faces setback again, and Samsung could help smooth things over
According to OLED-info, Apple may turn back to Samsung Display and LG Display, as BOE is struggling to meet supply demands. The report claims Apple ordered around 40 million panels from BOE, but the company has only managed to deliver about 7-8 million units. If these numbers hold up, BOE has only fulfilled about one-fifth of Apple’s OLED panel needs. With this in mind, Apple might bid adieu to BOE and turn once again to Samsung Display and LG Display. Both of these are renowned as being the best in the business.
While Apple does source OLED panels from LG Display, it’s unlikely to increase its orders soon. That’s because LG is mainly focused on providing LTPO OLED panels for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. That’s why Apple may stick with Samsung Display for the LTPS screen fulfillment for the non-Pro models.
Meanwhile, BOE and LG Display are set to supply OLED screens for the upcoming iPhone SE 4. It will feature a 6.1-inch AMOLED display. Apple’s target price for this screen is $25. Samsung Display, however, wasn’t on board with this, deciding the price was too low and walking away from talks.
Regardless of how things shake out, this will likely spell more revenue for Samsung, which has been facing struggles across several areas. Samsung Electronics shares have been recovering lately. As of writing, its shares listed on the Korea Exchange closed at 55,600 KRW. That’s a hike of 3.54% today.
